| Durant Hall Renovation |
Durant Hall, designed by John Galen Howard and built in 1911 as the first home for Boalt Law School, is being renovated and renewed to serve as a new home for deans and staff of the College of Letters and Science. Improvements to the building’s aging support systems as well as disabled access are important elements of the project; a new accessible entrance with a ramp and plaza will be built on the west side of the building. The project is being done with the guidance of a historic preservation architect and will be LEED certified in accordance with UC Berkeley green building practices.
Durant Hall most recently served as home to the East Asian Library, which moved this spring to the new C.V. Starr East Asian Library. Durant, located in the center of campus adjacent to Dwinelle, Wheeler and California Halls, is scheduled to be under construction through Fall semester 2009.
Fences are scheduled to go up around the building starting Monday October 20. The building and adjacent landscape will become part of the construction project site. Nearby roadways and pedestrian paths will remain open, although there may be temporary detours during the course of construction.
Schedule:
Work will typically start at 7:00am and end by 3:30pm, Monday to Friday.
Access:
Most construction vehicles will travel to Durant Hall via Campanile Way. The safety of everyone working and traveling in the area is paramount; please respect the direction given by flaggers and any temporary barricades.
